Ben Johnson, Martin Coffee President and Downtown Council board member, won overall Small Business Leader of the Year Thursday, Feb. 20.
“It’s a true honor to be selected among this incredibly talented 2020 SBLY class,” Johnson said at the event. “We’ve been roasting in downtown for three generations and my family and I couldn’t be more proud of this moment.”
Johnson was selected from 13 council SBLY members for his dedication to Downtown Jacksonville and his entrepreneurial spirit.
Martin Coffee is a third-generation family business, started downtown by Fred R. Martin – Ben’s grandfather – in 1957. Martin Coffee provides coffee services for restaurants and hotels, coffee shops and your office.
The brand is more than a jolt of morning caffeine – News4JAX recently spotlighted Martin team member Willie Deas, who was born with an intellectual difference and hired by Ben’s grandfather 50 years ago. Today he is an expert in coffee machinery at the company’s Talleyrand plant.
Johnson is active in the Downtown Council and his company sponsors coffee for DTC events.
The event, which was held at 927 Events, highlights Jacksonville’s entrepreneurial spirit. Winners must be a member in good standing, own at least 25 percent of their business, be active in day-to-day management, three years in business and revenues below $5 million.
